We just love seeing our community sharing their talents and knowledge. Together we are building skills, connections and resilience.
KNOT TYING WITH KAIKO RYAN
We had a fun-filled day at kaiako Ryans farm. He showed us tricks of how to measure rope without a tape measure. We had to brainstorm in our teams how to work out a length of rope. We learnt how to tie 4 useful knots and how to weight and tie hooks to our fishing rods. We loved exploring their BIG backyard and enjoyed a picnic in the sun. Thank you kaiako Ryan and we look forward to going fishing soon.

BUILDING AND CONSTRUCTING
We have been very blessed to have had wonderful support from our MLC Whanau and the community. They have offered us a wide variety of opportunities to learn new skills and gain new experiences in building and constructing all different types of things from helping out in building Tiny Homes to building cooking stoves, chicken coops and constructing raised beds and pathways. All great life skills which can undoubtedly come in very handy in the future!
GROWING FOOD FOR THE KITCHEN
We were very privileged to travel to Judy’s home & garden in the beautiful Waikawa which is 40 minutes from Invercargill just past Fortrose, and near Tokanui.
kaiako Judy has extensive gardening knowledge which she has thoughtfully presented in a practical, kids-focused session. We will learn to stack a compost bin, take cuttings, plant beans & garlic, make apple juice and sprout seeds & beans. She will also show us how to plan a garden for our own backyard and teach us how to create beautiful, nutritious soil to grow our vegetables and flowers in.
We want to bring these skills back to MLC's back yard garden and create a flourishing paradise with some adult help. We are already using our garden boxes for science experiments.
Afterwards we will share a picnic lunch and explore the beach.
SPCA - ANIMAL CARE AND WELFARE
Kaiako Tamsyn has joined the MLC team, and we are really grateful, as she has a lot of talents and energy. She is the boss at Invercargill SPCA and she organised a day there: we spent the morning cuddling the kittens and met the puppies and bigger dogs that are looking for loving homes. We learnt how to care for these animals - feeding, worming, exercising. Thanks so much kaiako Tamsyn, we loved our visit!
